Every third year, Slovenian Fund for Cultural Activities and Slovenian Wind Orchestras Society organize an international competition for wind orchestras in concert performances and until now the competitions have been in Koper, Velenje, and Novo mesto, with participation of 62 Wind Orchestras from 13 different countries. The Jury members have been renowned experts: Nikolaj Žličar, Simon Robinson, Reinhold Rogg, Evžen Zamečnik, Tomislav Fačini, Isabelle Ruf-Weber, Alojz Zupan, Siegmund Andraschek, John Stanley, Leon Bly and Trevor J. Ford. Competitions are under the patronage of CISM (Confédération Internationale des Sociétés Musicales) and in 2012 will be a part of cultural events during The European Capital of Culture, which is a title awarded according to a certain procedure by the European Union for a period of one year to one or more cities. The main cultural happening is primarily set in the second largest city in Slovenia or the capitol of the north-eastern Štajerska region and strategically expands on to five partner towns: Ptuj, Murska Sobota, Velenje, Slovenj Gradec and Novo mesto. The ECC 2012 programme is divided in to four thematic strands: Town Keys, Urban Furrows, Terminal 12 and Life at your Fingertips. Each of them aims to achieve different objectives within the greater goal of completely reanimating and reactivating the area and it’s inhabitants.
