5th INTERNATIONAL COMPETITION FOR WIND ORCHESTRAS IN CONCERT PERFORMANCE »SLOVENIJA 2012«
Velenje, Slovenia, June 29th – July 1st 2012
Every third year, Slovenian Fund for Cultural Activities and Slovenian Wind Orchestras Society organize an international competition for wind orchestras in concert performances and until now the competitions have been in Koper, Velenje, and Novo mesto, with participation of 62 Wind Orchestras from 13 different countries. The Jury members have been renowned experts: Nikolaj Žličar, Simon Robinson, Reinhold Rogg, Evžen Zamečnik, Tomislav Fačini, Isabelle Ruf-Weber, Alojz Zupan, Siegmund Andraschek, John Stanley, Leon Bly and Trevor J. Ford. Competitions are under the patronage of CISM (Confédération Internationale des Sociétés Musicales) and in 2012 will be a part of cultural events during The European Capital of Culture, which is a title awarded according to a certain procedure by the European Union for a period of one year to one or more cities. The main cultural happening is primarily set in the second largest city in Slovenia or the capitol of the north-eastern Štajerska region and strategically expands on to five partner towns: Ptuj, Murska Sobota, Velenje, Slovenj Gradec and Novo mesto. The ECC 2012 programme is divided in to four thematic strands: Town Keys, Urban Furrows, Terminal 12 and Life at your Fingertips. Each of them aims to achieve different objectives within the greater goal of completely reanimating and reactivating the area and it’s inhabitants.
PARTICIPANTS
The competition is open to all non-professional wind orchestra from Slovenia and abroad. Artistic Council of the Competition, composed of mag. Ivan Marin, Domen Prezelj and Matjaž Emeršič (appointed by the Organising Committee) selects participating wind orchestras according to their artistic merits and competition program, inherent in the application materials
APPLICATION
Orchestra should send to the organizer their application, consisting of:
- precisely filled-in Application Form,
– Recording of at least 2 compositions on CD or DVD, recorded in the period from January 1st 2007 to the time of application. It can also be a demo recording made at a rehearsal,
– Orchestra’s short curriculum vitae (at most 15 typewritten lines) and activity in the last season (concerts, performances, recordings…),
– 1 score or orchestral extract of the warming-up composition (if it is played),
– 1 score or orchestral extract of the first and second composition of wind orchestra’s own choice,
– 1 detailed photography of the wind orchestra,
Short description and good photography of the orchestra should be sent by e-mail to [email protected]
Wind orchestras must register not later than on Friday, 20th January 2012 (datum on post office seal).
Written application should be sent in a sealed envelope to the address:
Javni sklad RS za kulturne dejavnosti, Štefanova 5, SI-1000 Ljubljana, Slovenia. Please write also “Slovenija 2012” on the envelope.
Selected wind orchestras will with Artistic Council decision receive invoice for non refundable enrolment fee of 300,00 €, which should be paid till May 2012.
Selected orchestras will be obliged to send 4 additional copies of other competing compositions for the members of the Jury and the list of musicians till Monday, April 2nd 2012.
PROGRAM
The Fifth Competition is going to be held in Concert Hall in Music School Velenje, from June 29th till July 1st 2012. Competition will be in three categories.
Artistic Council selected the following Competition program:
Orchestras, competing in A (higher) category, shall perform:
COMPULSORY COMPOSITION: Rok Golob (1975): BOJAN ADAMIČ HOMMAGE, ZSG edition – The music is written for 100th anniversary of Bojan Adamič′s birth.
COMPOSITION OF THEIR OWN CHOICE: difficulty 5, 6 or E, F.
COMPOSITION OF THEIR OWN CHOICE: Composed by composer from the Wind Orchestra's native land, appropriate difficulty 5, 6 or E, F
WARMING-UP COMPOSITION: nonobligatory, not longer than 3 minutes
The whole performance should not be longer than 50 minutes.
Orchestras, competing in B (middle) category, shall perform:
COMPULSORY COMPOSITION: Igor Krivokapič (1965): RAZPRAVA O OBČUTLJIVOSTI, JSKD edition – The music is dedicated to Garden City Community College Band,
COMPOSITION OF THEIR OWN CHOICE: difficulty 4 or D.
COMPOSITION OF THEIR OWN CHOICE: Composed by composer from Wind Orchestra's native land, appropriate difficulty 4 or D
WARMING-UP COMPOSITION: nonobligatory, not longer than 3 minutes
The whole performance should not be longer than 40 minutes.
Orchestras, competing in C (lower) category, shall perform:
COMPULSORY COMPOSITION: Nejc BEČAN (1984): CONTESTANT OVERTURE, edition Si.music
COMPOSITION OF THEIR OWN CHOICE: difficulty 3 or C.
COMPOSITION OF THEIR OWN CHOICE: Composed by composer from Wind Orchestra's native land, appropriate difficulty 3 or C
WARMING-UP COMPOSITION: nonobligatory, not longer than 3 minutes
The whole performance should not be longer than 30 minutes.
JURY AND AWARDS
Competition will be adjudicated by International Jury of 5 renowned experts on wind orchestras. Each member of the jury will evaluate all competitive performances of each orchestra with numeric mark and text. Evaluation criteria are: intonation, sound, rhythm and tempo consistency, playing technique, dynamics and phrasing, artistic impression of concert performance.
International Jury will give following awards:
- The Golden Medal with an honor for the wind orchestras achieving at least 90% points;
- The Golden Medal for the wind orchestras achieving at least 80% points;
- The Silver Medal for the wind orchestras achieving at least 70% points;
- The Bronze Medal for the wind orchestras achieving at least 60% points;
- Certificate of Participation for all the rest.
The Jury will also reward the best orchestras with monetary awards.
Prizes in Category A:
1st place: the monetary award 1000 €
2nd place: the monetary award 500 €
Prizes in Category B:
1st place: the monetary award 800 €
2nd place: the monetary award 400 €
Prizes in Category C:
1st place: the monetary award 500 €
2nd place: the monetary award 250 €
Wind orchestras with equal number of points at the competition will share the corresponding prize in equal parts.
Jury will give also The award for the best performance of Slovenian obligatory composition
Jury can also propose some additional awards and diplomas:
All decisions of the Jury are final without any right of appeal.
The organizers give awards in cheques of their partners and competition sponsors and on orchestra account.
Jury’s decision (plaquetes) without points will be made public at least two hours after the completion of the competition Category.
Each orchestra will receive written opinion from all members of the Jury during the closing ceremony at the end of the competition.
GENERAL INFORMATION
Course of competition and its realisation is fully covered in the Regulations of the Competition that can be obtained from the organiser.
Selected wind orchestras can change their program or cancel participation at the competition no later than on June 1st 2012.
The Artistic Council must be informed if any changes are made in the composition of the orchestra once the registration form has been sent and shall inform the president of the jury before the competition at the latest.
Travel, accommodations and food are at expenses of the participating wind orchestras. However, the Organizer can provide some pecuniary options for orchestra wishing to stay overnight or having meals in Velenje. Options are available at http://www.imc-slovenija.si/
The Organizing Committee will provide percussion and additional instruments recorded in obligatory Slovenian compositions.
Wind orchestras overstaying in Velenje will have possibility to rehearse in a rehearsal hall.
Orchestras who wish to do any sightseeing or playing a concert during their stay may contact Organizer for further details.
The Organizer and Artistic Council reserve the right to modify the planned events to ensure the positive results of the Competition.
If the number of the participants in a single category is not sufficient, the Organizers may cancel that category.
The Organizer are not responsible for any eventual mishaps, loses, thefts, or any accidents to persons or things during their journey or during the competition.
Organizer has the right to audio and video record and broadcast the competition with no compensation being paid to the wind orchestras and to use such recordings for promotional purposes. Competing wind orchestras allow their performances at the competition to be publicly released.
Any complaints regarding the rules and regulation of the competition must be made to the organizers. Only the Slovene and English language will be taken into consideration. Original Slovenian text will be given preference in cases of dispute.
